How digital scanning can help save art works and buildings

If displaying objects shortens their life, do we have an obligation to future generations to display copies instead?

      Re-creating the Borgherini Chapel-copyright-Oak-Taylor-Smith-for-Factum-Foundation
As part of an upcoming exhibition about Sebastiano del Piombo in the National Gallery of Art, we have been asked to record and reproduce the Borgherini Chapel at the church of San Pietro in Montorio in Rome. The Chapel has been painted by both Sebastiano and Michelangelo. In principle the project will involve recording the color of the walls with panoramic photography in order to make a recreation (not exact facsimile) of the curved wall, the half dome and the flat front to be installed in the NG in London. Adam's initial cost estimation is about 25,000 euros. We have received drawings of the chapel with approx. dimensions so a more accurate quotation should be done. Generali insurance company might be on board for sponsoring part of this project. No dates have been fixed yet for recording.
